Medusa, also known as the Gorgon, is a mythological creature with snakes for hair and the power to turn anyone who looks at her into stone. She was born in ancient Greece and was once a beautiful woman until she was cursed by the goddess Athena for defying her. Medusa's beauty attracted the attention of Poseidon, the god of the sea, who raped her in Athena's temple. As punishment, Athena transformed Medusa's hair into snakes and made her so ugly that anyone who looked at her would turn to stone.
